The Spill Vase is one of those antique objects whose original purpose has largely been forgotten with time. Despite its name, it was never intended to "spill" water. Instead, it was designed to hold spills — tightly rolled strips of paper or wood shavings used to carry a flame from the fireplace to light candles, oil lamps, or pipes. Before matches became commonplace in the 19th century, spill vases were a practical household item found in many European homes. Often placed near the hearth, they combined utility with beauty, as potters and ceramic artists created them in elaborate floral, shell, and nature-inspired forms. As technology evolved, the need for spills disappeared, but these charming vessels remained. Today, they serve as a reminder of a slower era, when even the simplest daily rituals were carried out with elegance and intention. More than a decorative object, a Spill Vase is a small piece of social history — a glimpse into the warmth and romance of everyday life over a century ago. Condition: Very Good Vintage Condition. Stains at the bottom of the vase interior. Gold loss in general. Hairline to the top. Dimension: W12cm ; H14.5cm; Depth 5.5cm *There is no bible for every single vintage item.
