It started before Vintage1961/一切開始之前

Vintage1961 was founded in 2013, but the instinct behind it started long before that. As a kid, I was already obsessed with “treasure.” While other kids were playing, I would go with my neighbours to the garbage collection point — yes, literally — to look for things people had thrown away. Of course, my family was not happy when they found out. But to me, it wasn’t about “trash.” I was just curious — I always felt like there might be something interesting, something worth keeping. As a teenager, that turned into thrift shopping. I would spend HKD 5 on a top, cut it, reshape it, mix and match it — creating something completely my own. And I remember getting a lot of compliments. Looking back, it’s not surprising that I ended up studying Fashion and Textile at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

I was lucky to have the chance to travel and study abroad. It was during those years that I started to understand what I had always been drawn to — it was called vintage. But more than a word, it gave meaning to everything I had been doing. What fascinated me most was not just the pieces themselves, but the stories behind them. I remember vendors telling me where an item came from, who had owned it before, and why it was special to them. Sometimes they would explain how to use an object I had never seen before, or point out small details that I would have otherwise missed. That was when I started to learn how to really appreciate these pieces. Vintage1961 started to take shape more clearly after that. The work was featured in different media, and I was later invited to write a book on fashion history,

I started collecting simply because I loved these pieces. In 2013, I decided to take it a step further and started Vintage1961. It began as a small online shop, then slowly grew into weekend markets, and eventually a physical store in Causeway Bay. It wasn’t planned in a big way. It just grew naturally, one step at a time. At the same time, I started to design and recreate vintage-inspired pieces. I wanted to keep the feeling of vintage, but make them more wearable in today’s life. Each piece is carefully crafted by skilled tailors, with attention to detail. Made to be worn — and kept.

A new chapter

Moving to Montreal marked a new chapter in my life. Closing the physical store in Sheung Wan was not easy. It was something I had built step by step, and letting it go came with a lot of emotions. But at the same time, it felt like the right moment to move forward. Vintage1961 didn’t stop — it evolved. Today, it continues as an online platform, together with carefully curated pop-up events. Each year, meeting our customers in person has become something I truly look forward to. It’s no longer just about selling, but about reconnecting — seeing familiar faces, sharing stories, and experiencing the pieces together. Vintage1961 was never just about vintage — it’s about recognizing something worth keeping.
